Implementing a Product Data / Lifecycle Management (PDM / PLM) is a complex matter. It affects many business processes and the possibility of an organization to deal with changes.
Implementation model
Implementing a Product Data / Lifecycle Management (PDM / PLM) is a complex matter. It has many business processes and the possibility of an organization to deal with changes.
Awareness & Strategy
In the Awareness & Strategy phase, the acquaintance with the concepts of Data Management or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) takes place. The relationship can be established with process improvement actions within the company and initiatives such as Het NIeuwe Werken or System Engineering. Without a proper understanding of the possibilities, the organization has no insight into the impact of the implementation process and the expected improvements, costs and benefits.
Readiness & Design
In the Readiness & Design phase insight is gained into the current situation and the bottlenecks in the business processes as they are now recognized. Based on the bottlenecks, opportunities and threats, the vision will be developed in the Readiness phase for the improved business processes. This vision translates into a number of requirements that are set on the one hand in business processes and the organization, and on the other hand in information technology. The desired business processes are made as transparent as possible by drawing up a business process in which the future situation is indicated, so-called TO-BE process models. Depending on the desired detailing, it may be useful in this activity to map a number of information flows and document life cycles.
Implementation Preparation
In the Implementation Preparation phase, the vision is actually implemented and a start is made on implementing the desired process improvements. Following the analysis of the business processes and information provision from the Readiness & Design phase, the requirements and wishes regarding Data Management are now mapped out in as much detail as possible. On the basis of this data, the selection of the best-fitting solution takes place. At the end of the selection process, an advice is given to the management team with the best possible specification of the costs for hardware, software and implementation costs.
Implementation
At the beginning of the implementation phase, the Scope of Work (SOW) and the implementation plan for the implementation of the Data Management or PLM system are recorded. This includes specifying in detail the desired implementation (pilot) goals. The measuring points are now also indicated for determining the forecasted benefits. This is followed by the actual implementation of the first (pilot) implementation, including the evaluation thereof, leading to a final company-wide operational implementation.
Monitoring & Auditing
Although monitoring takes place in each phase, the Monitoring & Auditing phase determines, on the basis of the defined measurement points (metrics), whether an adjustment of the business processes and implementation is necessary.
Help helps
There are many pitfalls in the implementation process of a Data Management or PLM system. It is therefore advisable not to think too lightly about this and to involve outside help. HQ-consult has years of experience in both the selection and implementation of Data Management solutions and can support your company in any desired manner in any desired phase.
